SolaceFostering

Autumn is one of the most popular times of year for people to take the first steps towards becoming a foster carer. The new season brings a natural sense of fresh starts, and many people find that after summer they’re ready to make meaningful changes in their lives. If you’ve been thinking about fostering, autumn is a fantastic time to begin the process — so that you could be approved and ready to welcome a child into your home by the new year.

Why Autumn is a Great Time to Start the Fostering Process

Starting your fostering journey in autumn has several practical advantages. The assessment process typically takes four to six months, which means starting in September or October puts you on track to be approved in spring — a time when demand for foster placements is often high. Autumn also tends to be a quieter season for many families, with the excitement of summer behind you and the focus turning to home and routine.

At Solace Fostering, we welcome enquiries at any time of year. But if you’ve been sitting on the fence about fostering, autumn is the perfect season to take that first step.

Step 1: Research Fostering Agencies

Not all fostering agencies are the same. Independent fostering agencies (IFAs) like Solace Fostering are Ofsted-regulated and often provide higher levels of support and training than local authorities. When researching agencies, look for:

  • Ofsted rating (Outstanding is the highest)
  • The level of support and training offered
  • The fostering allowances and carer fees paid
  • The agency’s specialism — some focus on therapeutic or complex placements
  • Reviews and testimonials from existing foster carers

Solace Fostering is rated Outstanding by Ofsted and specialises in therapeutic fostering for children with complex needs. We serve Norfolk and Suffolk, with local offices and dedicated support teams across the region.

Step 2: Make Your Initial Enquiry

Once you’ve identified an agency you’re interested in, making an initial enquiry is straightforward and carries no commitment. At Solace Fostering, you can call us, email us, or fill in our online form. One of our experienced team members will then be in touch to have a friendly, informal conversation about fostering and whether it could be right for you.

Step 3: Prepare Your Home

To foster, you’ll need a spare bedroom for the child in your care. Autumn is a great time to get any spare rooms ready — clearing clutter, redecorating if needed, and making sure the space feels welcoming and safe. You don’t need a large house: a clean, comfortable spare room is all that’s required.

Step 4: Talk to Your Household

Fostering is a whole-family commitment. If you live with a partner, have children of your own, or have other people in your household, it’s important to have open conversations about fostering before you apply. Everyone in the home will need to be part of the assessment process, and it’s important that the decision is one everyone is comfortable with.

Step 5: Begin the Assessment Process

Once you’ve made an initial enquiry and decided to proceed, the formal assessment process begins. This includes:

  • DBS (criminal record) checks for all adults in the household
  • Medical references
  • Personal and professional references
  • A detailed home assessment (the Form F) carried out by a qualified social worker
  • Attendance at the agency’s pre-approval training programme

Throughout this process, Solace Fostering’s team will guide and support you at every stage. We understand that the assessment can feel daunting, and we work hard to make it as straightforward and supportive as possible.

What Happens After Approval?

Once you’re approved as a foster carer, you’ll be matched with a child or young person who is suited to your home and skills. Your supervising social worker will stay in regular contact, and Solace Fostering’s 24/7 support line is always available whenever you need advice or reassurance.

How long does the fostering assessment take?

The assessment process typically takes four to six months from initial enquiry to panel approval. Starting in autumn puts you on track to be approved in late winter or early spring.

Do I need a spare bedroom before I can start the assessment?

Yes. You must have a spare bedroom available for the child in your care. The room doesn’t need to be fully decorated, but it should be clean, safe, and comfortable.

Can I foster if I have children of my own?

Yes. Many foster carers have their own children. The assessment will consider how fostering would affect your existing family and ensure that all members of your household are prepared and supported.
