The Process

Becoming a foster carer is a big decision — and we’re with you every step of the way. Our training process is designed to be practical, supportive, and empowering, whether you’re new to fostering or looking to refresh your skills.

1: Initial Introduction

We start with a warm, informal chat to get to know you, your motivations, and answer any questions you have about fostering and the training ahead.

2: Skills to Foster Course

You’ll take part in our Skills to Foster pre-approval training — an interactive course that covers the essentials of foster care, safeguarding, child development, and more. It’s a chance to learn, reflect, and meet other prospective carers.

3: Assessment & Feedback

Following the course, your dedicated social worker will complete your fostering assessment (Form F). Feedback from your training sessions helps inform this process and identify any extra support you may need.

6: Annual Reviews & Refreshers

Your learning doesn’t stop. We offer regular refresher courses and personal development planning to help you grow with confidence year after year.

5: Specialist Support

We tailor training to your needs and the children you care for. This might include:

  • Specialist courses for complex needs

  • Support groups with other foster carers

  • 1:1 guidance from our therapeutic and social work teams

4: Ongoing Training & Development

Once approved, you’ll have access to a wide range of ongoing training including:

  • Therapeutic parenting

  • Trauma-informed care

  • Attachment and behaviour strategies

  • First aid and safeguarding

  • Online learning modules and in-person sessions
