The Process

Short-term fostering can be incredibly rewarding – offering children a safe and caring home during an uncertain time. Here’s how the process typically works at Solace, from placement to transition.

1. Emergency or Planned Placement

A child may be placed with you at short notice (e.g. in an emergency) or through planned care. Either way, we’ll always provide as much information as possible to help you prepare.

2. Welcoming the Child

We support you in helping the child settle in – whether they’re staying for a few nights or several months. Your role is to offer stability, safety, and kindness from day one.

3. Immediate Support

From the start, you’ll have access to your supervising social worker and 24/7 on-call support. We’ll also provide practical resources and guidance tailored to the child’s needs.

6. Transitioning with Care

When it’s time for the child to move on, we’ll guide you through the transition. You may help introduce them to their new home or carers, always prioritising their emotional wellbeing.

5. Planning the Next Steps

The aim of short-term care is to support the child while long-term decisions are made – such as returning home, being placed with relatives, or moving to long-term fostering or adoption.

4. Ongoing Communication

You’ll work closely with Solace and the child’s social worker to monitor progress and respond to changes. Regular check-ins ensure everyone is supported.
