What is Emergency Fostering?

Emergency fostering provides immediate, short-notice care for children who cannot remain in their home due to a sudden crisis. Placements can begin within hours and may last from one night to several weeks, while longer-term arrangements are made by the local authority. Emergency foster carers need to be flexible, resilient, and able to respond quickly to unexpected calls. At Solace Fostering, we prepare our emergency carers thoroughly so they feel confident and well-supported from the very first moment a child arrives.

You bridge the gap while local authority assessments are carried out and longer-term plans for the child are agreed and put in place.

Life-Changing Impact

Even a short placement can have a profound positive effect on a child's sense of safety, trust, and self-worth. Your home matters.

The Impact of Emergency Fostering in Norfolk & Suffolk

Emergency fostering can be life-changing — and life-saving — for the children who need it most. When a child is removed from a dangerous or unstable situation, the first few hours are critical. An emergency foster carer who responds with warmth, calm, and sensitivity can make an enormous difference to how a child experiences this frightening transition. Every emergency placement in Norfolk and Suffolk matters, and Solace Fostering is proud to support the dedicated carers who answer the call.

How Emergency Fostering Works

Emergency fostering in Norfolk and Suffolk is arranged at very short notice, often through the local authority’s emergency duty team. Here is what typically happens when an emergency placement is made:

1. Emergency Call

You may receive a call from Solace Fostering or the local authority at any time — including evenings and weekends. We’ll give you as much information as possible about the child before they arrive, though this may be limited in a genuine emergency.

2. Child Arrives

When the child arrives, your role is to offer immediate comfort, safety, and routine. Even simple things — a warm meal, a calm space, and a friendly face — can have a profound impact on a child in crisis.

3. Immediate Support

Solace Fostering’s 24/7 on-call support team is available throughout the placement. Your supervising social worker will be in touch as soon as practically possible to debrief and offer ongoing guidance.

4. Information Gathering

As more information becomes available about the child’s background and needs, we’ll share it with you promptly. Regular communication between you, Solace, and the local authority’s social worker is a key part of emergency placements.

5. Review and Planning

The local authority will begin planning the child’s longer-term care from the outset. You’ll be kept informed of progress and asked for your observations on the child’s wellbeing and behaviour.

6. Transition or Continuation

At the end of the emergency placement, the child will either return home (if safe to do so), move to a longer-term foster placement, or — in some cases — remain with you if a longer placement is agreed. We’ll support you and the child through whatever comes next.
